Neubie and NeuFit FAQ

What is the Neubie?

NEUBIE is NeuFit’s patent-pending electrical stimulation device. It is an acronym for “NEURO-BIO-ELECTRIC STIMULATOR.” It is FDA-cleared for:

  • maintaining and increasing range of motion
  • increasing circulation
  • neuromuscular re-education
  • preventing atrophy
  • reducing muscle spasms
  • preventing post-surgical DVT
  • relieving chronic, post-surgical, and post-traumatic pain

When the NEUBIE is combined with NeuFit protocols, the system provides for new methods of neuromuscular re-education. This can result in faster recovery time post-injury, improved overall fitness levels, and optimized performance.

As we all know, the nervous system controls every muscle movement. The Neubie can improve efficiency in how messages get from the nervous system to the muscles to move and perform specific actions. If a movement dysfunction is an inherent part of your injury or condition, contributing to your pain, limiting your mobility, or robbing you of performance, then the NeuFit System may be able to help you.

Is this covered by my insurance?

At Restorative PT, services are self-pay. Our services usually qualify for many clients who have FSA or HSA options, and those accounts can be used. Upon request, a superbill for physical therapy services using the Neubie can be provided with the correct ICD-10 and CPT codes so that you can submit your claim to your insurance company for reimbursement (except for Medicare beneficiaries).

Please note that not all insurance companies will reimburse for your claim. It is best to call your insurance company ahead of time to determine whether or not your claims are eligible for reimbursement.  For this, you will need to determine your out-of-network physical therapy benefit and whether your insurance company will reimburse for direct access physical therapy visits.  If they will not, you may need to have a referral from a physician to collect reimbursement.

Please contact us with any questions you may have about this at 828-788-3990 or info@restorative-pt.com before your first appointment.

Is this like my TENS unit?

Both the Neubie and TENS units are types of electrical stimulation. That is, however, where the similarities stop. The Neubie is much more powerful, has different effects on the body, and can do more things.

A TENS unit is traditionally used to mask pain, but the Neubie can do much more.

The NEUBIE is FDA-cleared for the following uses:

  • Maintaining and increasing range of motion
  • Increasing circulation
  • Neuromuscular re-education
  • Preventing atrophy
  • Reducing muscle spasms
  • Preventing post-surgical DVT’s
  • Relief of chronic, post-surgical, and post-traumatic pain

It is considered safe as long as it is used within the appropriate guidelines. For example, it is contraindicated for people who have a pacemaker or are pregnant. There are other situations in which practitioners should exercise caution. If you have any questions about your particular situation, please consult your medical professional.

Can the NeuFit System and the Neubie help with my injury?

The answer to that is: it depends.  Fortunately, the NeuFit System can help most of the people who use it. Coupled with the Neubie’s ability to re-educate muscles, increase blood flow, improve range of motion, prevent atrophy, decrease spasms, and relieve or manage pain, the NeuFit system has helped many people recover from sports injuries and various traumas and surgeries.  Naturally, there are times when therapy and rehab strategies aren’t enough, and more serious interventions are necessary. If something is completely torn, for example, other interventions may be necessary.

The good news is that NeuFit is non-invasive and very safe. Because of the low risks, it is often worth trying as a conservative strategy before considering more serious and invasive interventions like surgery and injections.

Can NeuFit and the Neubie help with neurological conditions?

Although the Neubie device is not indicated to treat neurological conditions, the NeuFit System has been able to help some people with neurological disorders and deficits to manage their symptoms and improve their overall quality of life.

The Neubie device can reduce spasms, increase range of motion, improve circulation, prevent atrophy, and provide neuromuscular re-education. Combined with NeuFit protocols, this system has enabled some people with neurological disorders and deficits to improve function, become more mobile, and return to activities that had become challenging or impossible in the past due to their condition.

That being said, every situation is as unique as the individual, and results are not guaranteed.  Harnessing the Neubie’s capacity for neuromuscular re-education, the NeuFit System has helped some people restore function.

Some examples of benefits include improvements in strength, balance, movement, and/or the ability to complete activities of daily living. These benefits can range from slight to marked.  In a few cases, this system has helped create dramatic changes, such as helping people get out of wheelchairs and walk again.

There are many factors that affect a person’s recovery potential, so, unfortunately, NeuFit will not be helpful in all cases. For instance, we don’t yet have the technology to help with complete spinal cord injuries.

If you or someone you know is dealing with neurological challenges, we encourage you to reach out to us to discuss your situation. It costs nothing to have a conversation about it and see if the NeuFit system might be an option for you.

Can this system and technology be used to improve and maintain fitness levels?

In most cases, yes!  The Neubie can increase muscle fiber recruitment, improve how your body processes inputs (which affects output), and improve recovery.  Many athletes, busy parents, entrepreneurs, and weekend warriors have used this system to aid them in their work-out, cut down on time devoted to fitness, and improve recovery.

If you have questions about how the Neubie and the NeuFit system can help you achieve your fitness goals, please contact us here.
